Forsyth Institute Researchers Present Studies of BriteSmile Efficacy, Safety at AADR Annual Meeting

Completion of Studies Key Step in Effort to Secure ADA Approval

Walnut Creek, CA Ń BriteSmile Inc. (NASDAQ: BSML) announced today that researchers from BostonŐs prestigious Forsyth Institute will present the final results of two clinical studies on the safety and efficacy of the BriteSmile procedure at the American Association of Dental Research (AADR) Annual Meeting in Chicago, March 7-10.

The papers detail the safety and efficacy of BriteSmileŐs unique light/hydrogen peroxide gel combination, compared to the gel or light alone. The second study examined the effect of BriteSmile on tooth color change as measured by a colorimeter. The studies to be presented include:

  • A randomized, single blind clinical trial of tooth whitening with peroxide and light. M. Tavares, J.M. Goodson, J. Stutz, Szu-I Liao, R. Kent, M. Newman. (Forsyth Institute, Boston, MA)
  • Colorimeter measurement of tooth whitening. J.M. Goodson, M. Tavares, J. Stutz, Szu-I Liao, R. Kent, M. Newman. (Forsyth Institute, Boston, MA)

Each of the studies was completed in full compliance with the American Dental Association (ADA) guidelines and standard scientific national and international standards. The abstracts were also published in Volume 80 (Special Issue) of the Journal of Dental Research. The completion of independent clinical studies, including the two studies cited above, is part of the content protocol outlined by the ADA for BriteSmileŐs application for ADA approval for the procedure.

„We are very pleased to have the Forsyth Institute present the findings of these studies to the scientific community and distinguished members of the AADR. Not only do these findings confirm our own research, but also validate the results that BriteSmileŐs 2000 dentists and 100,000 whitening patients see every day,“ said John Reed, BriteSmile Chief Executive Officer.

The clinical studies found an average whitening effect of 8.34 shade change increments and no unexpected side effects. Additionally, the Forsyth Institute found that the combination of the proprietary BriteSmile light and proprietary BriteSmile gel resulted in a significant increase in tooth whitening not achieved by either peroxide gel or light alone.

The Forsyth Institute also found that 96.6 percent of the patients who experienced the proprietary BriteSmile procedure said that the treatment moderately or greatly increased the whiteness of their teeth. Of those participants who had the peroxide treatment alone, only 39.3 percent noticed the same degree of whitening.

The preliminary findings of the Forsyth Institute studies were first released in September 2000.
